Some common signs of feeding and swallowing difficulty include: poor growth and weight gain, difficulty latching to the breast or bottle, tongue clicking while feeding, lip smacking while feeding, coughing or choking during feeds, falling asleep during feedings, needing to be sleeping or asleep for feedings, gagging or becoming stressed while feeding, painful latch if breastfeeding, frequent fussiness after feedings, difficulty chewing or transitioning to solid foods.
I always recommend an evaluation if your child is demonstrating signs of feeding and swallowing difficulty because all children are unique and individual and I believe recommendations should be offered specifically for what is seen on assessment.
